As I considered what I would write this morning I must confess that I found myself quite torn. I considered topics like , ‘Living in a Divided America’ , ‘Guilty until proven Innocent’, ‘Trial by Accusation’, and even ‘He said, She Said’. Yes, you can tell that over the past few days, my attention (like the attention of probably most Americans) has been captivated by the events that are taking place in Washington. Now I realize that your perspective of what is going on is probably greatly influenced by your political beliefs. For those who have been supportive of the president’s choice for Supreme Court Justice, you have most probably taken the attitude like, ‘Yep, just another dirty trick to wait until the last minute and then bring up this accusation.’ Or, ‘Well, I don’t believe that he is guilty, but even if he is, we are talking about something that happened 30+ years ago and he has proven himself since then to be a much different person then that.’ On the other hand, If you were opposed to the president’s choice then you have probably taken this attitude, ‘Well, it doesn't matter how or when it came out, the point is that it did, and we certainly don’t need a person like that sitting on the Supreme Court.’ Or perhaps ‘Well, I knew that he was the devil all along and it’s about time that the truth came out.’ With these two extreme polar opposites, I guess that it is not surprising that we find ourselves in this situation.
The sad truth is, that in this situation there will be NO Winners! Judge Kavanaugh, a man, who in his lifetime had built an impeccable reputation, even if he is appointed will carry the question and stigma of the past few days with him for the rest of his life. (Not to mention the hurt to his wife and children as they are approached and accused by other people.)
Then of course there is Dr. Ford. She too, is a victim here. Her desire was for her identity to be kept private. She had no desire to be put on the national stage and be judged by all Americans. Now she finds herself in the middle of a great controversy where she is either loved or hated. No matter what happens, her integrity will be questioned, and when she walks down the street she will be looked at and she will no doubt be hearing whispers as she passes by.
But ultimately, we are the biggest losers. Face it, what man, (or woman) that is in their right mind would want to put themselves in this kind of situation? To have their name dragged through the mud, to put a target upon themselves and their family? Yes, I am afraid that in the future, we will miss out on most of the best judges and be forced to take many whose ego or desire for power matters more to them than their reputation and family?
Once again, we are reminded of just how desperately we need to pray for our nation.
