America: An Anti-Christian Nation?

Is America becoming an anti-Christian Nation? You know, it seems rather ironic that we would be asking this question when only a few years ago we would have asked questions like: “Is America still a Christian Nation?” or “Is America Truly a Christian Nation?” We had begun to ask these questions because many, if not most, considered our nation to be a “Christian Nation”. After all, many of our Founding Fathers were devout Christians, and even those who were not held the deepest respect for God, the things of God and for Christianity in general.

In the Declaration of Independence they called upon Divine Authority as a foundation for the principles upon which this nation is founded. They wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” In the closing paragraph they wrote: “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, ... And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” But this of course is not surprising considering the fact that the pilgrims, some of the earliest settlers, did come here for no other reason than their pursuit of religious freedom. Furthermore, the Presidents that led our nation have also led our nation to God in prayer such as, for example: George Washington who prayed “O eternal and everlasting God”, Thomas Jefferson who prayed to the “Almighty God, Who has given us this good land for our heritage;” and Franklin D. Roosevelt who prayed as we entered WWII “Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion and our civilization,”

Yes, there is much evidence to demonstrate our past dependance upon God as a nation, but is that all changing? We will speak more about this later.
