James 1:14-15 tells us: “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” (KJV) Last week, we talked about Eve's Deception, and we, like Eve, are easily deceived. Why? Because we want to believe what we want to believe. See, we have our own agenda, and we, ourselves, are largely responsible for any deception that we might experience. We have a tendency to look for those who will tell us what we want to hear. (We probably see this played out more in church than anywhere else.) Over the past few weeks we have discussed many aspects of this, but the final question is: What do we do about it? Well, here I would like to focus on ourselves. Sure, the rest of the world may have rejected the truth to the point that they don't even know what the truth is, but we don't have to be likewise deceived.
It has been said, that the best way to recognize counterfit money is to study and know what the real thing looks like: to know every aspect of the real genuine article. Here scripture gives us a clue on how to know and recognize the “Truth”. 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (KJV) The secret is found in knowing the “Truth” and the “Truth” is only revealed in God's Word. Sure, you may hear people use the expression: “God told me this” or “God told me that” but if it does not line up with or agree with what God has revealed to us in His Word or, if we feel “led” then here too we must verify that it lines up with the “Revealed Word of God”. The Word is like a plum line, it tells us the truth. It is not affected by popular opinion or emotion. It is not changed by the winds of political correctness. The Word of God reveals the truth about ourselves and the world around us. We must study the Word for what it says, not for what we want it to say! The only way that we can protect ourselves from rejecting the Truth is to know and embrace the Truth of God's Word! - Pastor Tim
