The State of the Union

Posted on February 4, 2018 at 10:00 AM

This past week the President gave his State of the Union Address to Congress. This is a tradition which goes all the way back to the first President of the United States, George Washington. Through the years this address has been given as a speech or as a written document to the members of the Congress of These United States. During the Johnson administration this speech has been shifted to a prime time spot on national TV and of course, in doing so has become a bit more political in nature as it is now a tool to sway public opinion, not just the congress.

During these speeches we typically hear how the current administration has made things better, and what the President believes our Government can do to make things even better still. Of course, this speech is always followed by political spin from both parties and naturally, the media puts its own spin on every thing that is said. If you missed the speech and try to depend upon what is said about the speech you end up with a tremendous amount of uncertainty about what was actually said. Further, even if you do hear the address and understand everything that was said about it, it all simply comes down to opinion.

So, what is the true state of our Union, and how do we measure it? Well, simply put, the only way to truly measure it is to ask the question ‘What does God think about it?” And the only way we can know this is to see what He has said in His Word.

There is a story that is told about Abraham Lincoln. It is said that someone once asked him during the Civil War if he believed that God was on his side? It is said that his response was that the question was not ‘is God on our side’, but rather ‘are we on His side’?

When it comes to the State of the Union all we need to ask is: Are we on God’s side?
